One’s smile is much like a walking, talking business card. It tells people a lot about you and psychology has actually proven that a smile is one of the first things we notice about other people. That’s why just about everyone wants their teeth to look their absolute best. However, years of drinking coffee and/or red wine, or of smoking tobacco, can damage, stain, or chip our teeth. At the same time, some are born with dental issues such as gap in our teeth, misaligned or asymmetric smiles. Luckily, if you live in Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Jonathan Cook, cosmetic dentist, can help you deal with all those issues, as well as with numerous others.

Teeth Whitening at JJ Dental, in Fort Lauderdale
Who doesn’t dream of that impeccable, gleaming, impressively white smile? Unfortunately, it seems that this ideal is not simple to attain by most people, no matter how careful they are with their dental hygiene habits, how often they brush, and how effective their toothpaste is. Aging, one’s diet, and several other factors all contribute to the apparition of discolored patches and stains on the skin of one’s teeth.
How have Cosmetic Procedures changed the lives of your patients?
I’ve got a patient who sticks out in my mind. She came to me. She had neglected her teeth for a very, very long time, and she had broken down teeth, rotten teeth, gum disease. Her mouth was a mess. She came to me, and really, she had neglected her teeth because she had this terrible fear of dentists, surprise, surprise.
How can Cosmetic Dentistry change a person’s life?
I had one patient, and I have a lot of these patients actually. One in particular that comes to mind that came to me. She was middle-aged and she was newly divorced. She didn’t feel good about her appearance, so she was doing different types of cosmetic work to her face. But her biggest concern was her teeth.
What is a Crown?
A Crown is not a filling but is actually mounted on top of an existing tooth to change the shape of the tooth. A crown could be a gold crown. It could be a metal crown. There are some patients who want them in the front.
Then there are porcelain fused to metal crowns, which is really just a metal substructure, which gives the crown more resistance to fracture. Then, on top of that metal goes porcelain. You have the strength of the metal, but then you also have the aesthetics of porcelain. Then you have all porcelain crowns, and all porcelain crowns are the most aesthetic crowns. They’re just as strong as any other crown, and especially nowadays, they’re highly fracture resistant.
What kinds of Veneers are there?
You’ve got really two different types of veneers for the most part. One is a prepless (no preparation) veneer, or in some cases people like to refer to them as Lumineers, which is really just a marketing term. It’s not a particular type of porcelain, or it’s not a particular, different type of veneer. It’s just a porcelain facing on the tooth, just as a traditional veneer would be.
Who works in your office and what do they do?
Our staff is what I’m most proud of. We’ve got three doctors including myself in the office and all are just excellent in their own ways. We have Dr. Brenner who’s been practicing in the office for over 40 years, and he got a fantasist reputation. He’s a wonderful dentist. The patients just fall in love with him. He’s got tons of experience as far as cosmetic dentistry goes, and really general dentistry as well. He’s a great part of our team. I want to emphasize that, at our office, it is a team there.
I had fillings many years ago that have since worn down or fallen out leaving holes in my teeth. What should I do?
It sounds to me as if something else is going on there. I would assess it and maybe it’s a matter of just placing fillings, but changing the preparation of the hole, basically, the cavity prep. You have to prepare the cavity in a certain way, depending on the position on the tooth and depending on what tooth it is, to maximize the longevity of that filling.
I have a grinding problem and the front of my teeth are worn down and some of my front teeth are pointy and sharp
What a lot of patients don’t realize is that if they’ve worn their front teeth down so much, they can do a couple of different things.
Number one, if the front teeth are worn down, the back teeth are more than likely worn down because there’s more force that’s generated the further back that you go as opposed to in the front. There’s no question that a lot of damage has been done on the back teeth as well. If that’s the case, in some cases, the patient’s actually lose what’s called vertical dimension.
