I would say the lack of flossing. What happens is I often see more cavities have developed between the teeth where if a patient flosses properly and effectively, developing decay in between the teeth is significantly reduced. That’s number one.

Have you done any cosmetic work to your own teeth?
I had braces for four and-a-half years. I’ve whitened my teeth and that’s it. Never had a cavity, never had to address any issues. I think to some degree I got lucky with genetics, but also I take very, very good care of my teeth. Obviously, it’s important for me to.
Is there any sensitivity involved in teeth whitening, and if so, is it temporary or permanent?
Some patients do experience sensitivity following teeth whitening but it’s totally temporary. The bleaching gel opens the pores in your teeth. The tooth, believe it or not, has pores just like in your skin. The gel will open the pores and draw the the external stain out of those pores and it lightens the teeth. If you’re opening the pores of the teeth, sure you’re pulling stain out of the teeth, but you’re also making the tooth more permeable, and more sensitive to cold or hot things as well.
When would I need a tooth extracted or removed versus getting a filling?
The tooth is three dimensional. When decay extends through the top of the tooth and all the way into an area that’s either inaccessible, or it’s just an area where it’s going to make the tooth so fragile where it just doesn’t make sense to restore it, in those instances the tooth would need to be extracted versus placing a filling.
What are some of the concerns and care necessary after a tooth is pulled?
Depending on where the tooth is positioned and depending on the patient, sometimes it’s important to place a bone grafting within the socket of the tooth, after a tooth is pulled. And, again, that’s to help decrease the amount of shrinkage that occurs because as the socket heals the bone kind of fills in on itself because now you don’t have a tooth that’s holding that space anymore. So in the very least place some sutures, or some stitches, to re-approximate the tissue over top of the socket to decrease the likelihood of any sort of food packing in there.
How would you define Periodontics?
Periodontics is really the study of the supporting structures of the teeth. So that involves the tissue, the gums that involves the periodontal ligament that holds the teeth into place within their socket, and that also involves the bone. So periodontics is doing a crown lengthening procedure. A crown lengthening procedure is a matter of cutting away a little bit of tissue, like for instance, if a patient has very, very short teeth when they smile, sometimes that a case where there’s just too much tissue. And by cutting back the tissue and sometimes the bone that underlies the tissue in order to create a more aesthetic look.

Do you want the “tooth” and nothing but the “tooth?” Well, here it is: Having good teeth demands a lot of work. You may be born with a good set of pearly whites but if you fail to brush and floss twice a day, every day, like your parents told you to, those ivories will start to take on a stained shade. The color becomes even more pronounced when you smoke and drink heavily. Nothing wrong with a puff or two after a stressful day or a shot of something to celebrate, on occasion, but there is something wrong with not following some dental maintenance.
