Question: I really love drinking red wine. Do I have to give it up completely to keep my teeth from being stained or is there anything that I can do after drinking red wine that will keep my teeth from getting messed up?

Do you recommend a certain type of tooth paste?
Colgate Total I find to be the best for me. At the end of the day, just about any toothpaste on the market has the same ingredients, and those ingredients are highly effective. The technology today is, you’re really not going to find a toothpaste on the market that bad. You’re really not going to find a toothpaste that’s detrimental to your health, unless you have had an allergy to cinnamon or something and you buy cinnamon flavored toothpaste. Really, you can’t really go wrong.
How often do you attend conferences and continue your education?
At least once every month or every two months I take a refresher or workshop course. When I take the courses, I take full weekend courses, or sometimes monthly courses, where you’re going back multiple times with a given time frame. I’m constantly reading, and studying up, and staying in tune with what’s out there.
What should I do if I have a Dental Emergency after office hours?
You call the office, and the office will call me. Or the emergency call center will call me, and I’ll respond. I call the patient. Either prescribe pain medicine or antibiotics if it’s a patient of record, or I will just agree to either see them on the weekend, if I feel that it’s really that much of an emergency.
What should I do about my chipped front teeth?
First, I would have to look at the bite and determine why it is that they chipped. Once I determine why it is that they chipped, then if that is a matter of a para-functional habit that you might have at night, meaning maybe you’re grinding aggressively, then that would be what we need to address, ultimately.
I had fillings many years ago that have since worn down or fallen out leaving holes in my teeth. What should I do?
It sounds to me as if something else is going on there. I would assess it and maybe it’s a matter of just placing fillings, but changing the preparation of the hole, basically, the cavity prep. You have to prepare the cavity in a certain way, depending on the position on the tooth and depending on what tooth it is, to maximize the longevity of that filling.
I have a grinding problem and the front of my teeth are worn down and some of my front teeth are pointy and sharp
What a lot of patients don’t realize is that if they’ve worn their front teeth down so much, they can do a couple of different things.
Number one, if the front teeth are worn down, the back teeth are more than likely worn down because there’s more force that’s generated the further back that you go as opposed to in the front. There’s no question that a lot of damage has been done on the back teeth as well. If that’s the case, in some cases, the patient’s actually lose what’s called vertical dimension.
What are the most common Dental Problems patients seem to have?
I would say the lack of flossing. What happens is I often see more cavities have developed between the teeth where if a patient flosses properly and effectively, developing decay in between the teeth is significantly reduced. That’s number one.
Have you done any cosmetic work to your own teeth?
I had braces for four and-a-half years. I’ve whitened my teeth and that’s it. Never had a cavity, never had to address any issues. I think to some degree I got lucky with genetics, but also I take very, very good care of my teeth. Obviously, it’s important for me to.
Is there any sensitivity involved in teeth whitening, and if so, is it temporary or permanent?
Some patients do experience sensitivity following teeth whitening but it’s totally temporary. The bleaching gel opens the pores in your teeth. The tooth, believe it or not, has pores just like in your skin. The gel will open the pores and draw the the external stain out of those pores and it lightens the teeth. If you’re opening the pores of the teeth, sure you’re pulling stain out of the teeth, but you’re also making the tooth more permeable, and more sensitive to cold or hot things as well.
