When would you recommend bridgework?

An ideal time when you would want or need a bridge, sometimes if the patient’s health isn’t such that they would be a candidate to place an implant, that’s an ideal situation. Another ideal situation, I would say it’s like killing two birds with one stone, if you had a missing tooth and a bridge was one of your options to replace that missing tooth and both teeth on either side either already had a crown or possibly had root canals done to both but didn’t have a crown, then in a way you kill two birds with one stone. What is a Root Canal and when is it necessary?

Often patients are not aware that they need a root canal, that’s important because most patients will say that they don’t have any pain so they don’t need a root canal. But, again, generally speaking a patient will need a root canal when the nerve tissue is infected or damaged beyond repair. (more…) […]

When would I need a tooth extracted or removed versus getting a filling?

The tooth is three dimensional. When decay extends through the top of the tooth and all the way into an area that’s either inaccessible, or it’s just an area where it’s going to make the tooth so fragile where it just doesn’t make sense to restore it, in those instances the tooth would need to be extracted versus placing a filling. What are some of the concerns and care necessary after a tooth is pulled?

Depending on where the tooth is positioned and depending on the patient, sometimes it’s important to place a bone grafting within the socket of the tooth, after a tooth is pulled. And, again, that’s to help decrease the amount of shrinkage that occurs because as the socket heals the bone kind of fills in on itself because now you don’t have a tooth that’s holding that space anymore. So in the very least place some sutures, or some stitches, to re-approximate the tissue over top of the socket to decrease the likelihood of any sort of food packing in there. […]

How do you determine a filling is necessary and what is the process?

In our office we don’t have the amalgam or the metal fillings. We use a composite and it’s made of quartz and resins and it’s basically a soft material when it’s placed and then it becomes just as rigid as your tooth structure. Scientists have tried to mimic all the properties of the tooth, so that means how they respond under compressive forces, how the tooth would respond under tensile forces, which would be pulling, so we attempt to mimic the tooth as closely as possible. (more…) […]

How would you define Periodontics?

Periodontics is really the study of the supporting structures of the teeth. So that involves the tissue, the gums that involves the periodontal ligament that holds the teeth into place within their socket, and that also involves the bone. So periodontics is doing a crown lengthening procedure. A crown lengthening procedure is a matter of cutting away a little bit of tissue, like for instance, if a patient has very, very short teeth when they smile, sometimes that a case where there’s just too much tissue. And by cutting back the tissue and sometimes the bone that underlies the tissue […]
